Although these are not final figures, the NHTSA is investigating 71 crashes, involving 89 deaths, which could have been caused by the, now famous, Toyota unintended acceleration fault. Back, in March, the NHTSA has announced that a staggering 52 deaths have been caused by Toyota's faulty system.

Although NHTSA is linking the acceleration problem to 71 events, it has received over 6,200 notifications regarding this matter since back in 2000. Out of those, almost 2,600 were received since March, when the Toyota acceleration problem came out into the spotlight.
