The German press reports that BMW is developing a turbocharged diesel engine to go into the BMW 320si E90 that will compete in the 2008 WTCC (World Touring Car Championship). The SEAT Leon TDi was introduced on the WTCC tracks back in July and has won 3 races since then. The FIA regulations for the WTCC also favor the diesel engined cars.
However, BMW Motorsport boss Mario Thiessen is not very pleased with the idea, mostly because of the time it takes to develop, test and race tune a new engine.
The diesel won Le Mans and the World Touring Car Championship may very well be the next in line.
