| Chevrolet Introduces the Seatbelt |

Chevrolet conducted a study on 1200 UK drivers asking them about their shopping habits. It seems that British drivers spend around 70 million pounds on groceries a year and 350 million on the damage they make when they spill all over the car in a tight turn or an emergency braking situation.
To take care of this problem Chevrolet is introducing two concept products: a shopping seatbelt and a boot cross.
Chevrolet Press release:
£350 MILLION COST OF CRYING OVER SPILT MILK ...AND OTHER GROCERIES
Brits spend nearly £70 billion on groceries a |
year, but poor packing combined with clumsy driving means £350 million worth is damaged on the journey back from the shops and never actually reaches the kitchen cupboard.
Chevrolet, a carmaker synonymous with value for money, has questioned over 1,200 UK drivers about their shopping habits to mark the launch of two concept products, a specially designed shopping seatbelt and a boot cross – a model created to prevent groceries from being damaged during transit and save drivers from an inflated shopping bill. |
Two thirds of drivers (65 per cent) confess they rarely open their car boot to store shopping in, preferring to put it on the back seat – despite the fact that by doing this you increase your chances of breaking and spilling your groceries by up to 20 per cent.
Men waste over twice as much money as their female counterparts by damaging an average of £35 worth of goods annually, whereas women spoil under £30 worth – suggesting that the fairer sex are better at packing their shopping bags and are not as clumsy behind the wheel when they know they have got shopping in the back. |
 |
| Shoppers in the north-east are more likely to break items than anywhere else in the UK, with 26 percent admitting to breaking at least one item on their last shopping trip. Midlanders come second in the shopping-accident league with 20 per cent owning up to damaging something on their most recent shop. Londoners get the most value for money from their purchases with only 5 per cent having had a recent grocery accident, whereas the shopping in Scotland is the second safest with 8 per cent of drivers damaging something the last time they went to buy groceries.

Further to this, 1 in 20 confessed to spending money on professional cleaning services to clean up their spills and almost a third of those questioned came clean themselves and admitted they try and hide the mess from their partners. Women will pay out an average of £70 a year to have their car valeted after spilling their shopping, taking more care to tidy up after themselves, compared to men who will only spend an average of £20 on the same service.
Les Turton of Chevrolet comments:
“Busy lifestyles often mean that taking the time to store grocery shopping properly in the car can take a back seat, quite literally. The lack of care put into preventing shopping casualties is |
surprising considering the amount we spend on our purchases. The proposal of a Chevrolet seatbelt and boot-cross would help to curb the huge amount of money wasted by lowering the number of breakages and spills.”
The top ten shopping casualties on the journey from supermarket to shelf are:
Smashed bottles of wine (29 per cent of all damaged shopping)
Crushed flowers (20 per cent)
Spilt milk (14 per cent)
Cracked eggs (11 per cent)
Broken biscuits (8 per cent)
Flattened bread (6 per cent)
Squashed cakes (5 per cent)
Shattered jars (4 per cent)
Bruised fruit and vegetables (2 per cent)
Leaking yoghurt (1 per cent) |
