Lamborghini's CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, announced that the Italian company has reached the conclusion that it will have more to gain if it will focus on lightweight techniques when building their cars rather than more horsepower. Numbers like the one of the Lamborghini Murcielago SV, 670 hp and 342 km/h top speed, are impressive, but almost none of its drivers ever reach these sort of speeds. On the other hand, reducing the weigh of the car offers an increased acceleration and also reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Top speed is not always the greatest excitement, and it's possible to get even more thrills from a powerful acceleration.
One other reason for Lamborghini's decision is the possibility for FIA to restrict engine performance in the future.
This means that in the future, Lamborghini supercars won't be able to reach such incredible speeds, but we guess they will deliver more excitement with blistering acceleration.
