OnStar Enters Aftermarket Market

GM announced yesterday that OnStar enters the aftermarket market and that it will go on sale through Best Buy in the spring of 2011. This means that OnStar, which is currently available only on General Motors models, will be available for almost all car models. OnStar integrates safety, security and connectivity services in a rearview mirror. It even has an Automatic Crash Response function.

The OnStar aftermarket price is set at 299 USD and will be available at first through Best Buy only. Other retailers will follow soon.

Some of the services offered through the aftermarket OnStar system include: Link to Emergency Services, Stolen Vehicle Location Assistance,

Turn-by-Turn Navigation, Roadside Assistance and Hands-Free Calling.

Apart from those functions, the aftermarket OnStar system will also offer phone and Facebook messages reading capabilities.

Apart from the base OnStar price, you'll have to add between $75 and $100 for installation, plus the services fee which start at 18.95 USD a month or 199 USD a year.
