Peugeot Press Release:

Enjoyable urban driving for the professional users

The Bipper is a new commercial vehicle from Peugeot and is particularly well suited to the requirements of urban use. With a length of 3.86 m, and a load volume of 2.5 m3, this innovative vehicle completes the renewal of the Peugeot range of commercial vehicles, which started with the Boxer back in June 2006.

The Bipper is designed for professionals in search of a responsive vehicle that handles well and can be parked easily. Thanks to asymmetric hinged rear doors and sliding side doors, Bipper users can

be assured of easy loading and unloading, even in the narrowest of spaces.

As it can turn itself into a mobile office or increase its usable load length by means of an ingenious and innovative folding passenger seat, the Peugeot Bipper can adapt to a range of varied and demanding uses.

It is available with a choice of two engines. A 1.4 liter petrol engine developing a power of 54 kW (≈ 75 bhp CEE) or a 1.4 liter HDi diesel engine developing 50 kW (≈ 70 bhp CEE)

(renowned for its economy and low emissions - 119 g CO2 with 1.4 l HDi). This engine is also available with an electronically controlled manual gearbox. This type of gearbox is not normally found on this type of vehicle.

Available as an option on the diesel version, the electronically controlled manual gearbox offers greater convenience to drivers using the vehicle in busy urban areas. For professionals who spend many hours in their van this gearbox will be a huge benefit to them, in terms of reduced driving

fatigue and reduced fuel consumption and emissions.

Through the quality of its dynamic road holding, through its modern lines, its sturdiness, its comfort, its modular load space and its low running costs, the Bipper is ready to take on the urban jungle.

Exterior style

The Bipper’s compact body shape and dynamic, rounded contours gives it a welcoming appearance. Its user-friendliness is immediately apparent. At the same time its sturdy features, evident at first sight, leave no doubt that the vehicle can easily hold its own in the demanding world for

which it was built – the city! Its purposeful design at the front expresses the Bipper’s dynamic credentials. The wide front grille is in keeping with Peugeot design and confirms its identification to the brand. This is also apparent from the location of the Peugeot badge on the bonnet.

The colored one-piece lower front panel is the feature which best characterises the vehicle’s strength and vitality. Separating the sharp lines of the bonnet, through its generous, protective and wraparound design, it suggests a readiness to take the lead and sturdiness able to withstand any test.

The smooth glass headlamps, located above the extended lower front panel, rise to half-way up the wings. Enhancing the Bipper’s friendly look through their specific design, the headlamps provide a harmonious link between the bonnet, the wings and the lower front panel.

In the same way, the large wheel arches extend the contours of the front design and then blend smoothly into the side profile. They express an assertive personality.

A large front windscreen in relation to the Bipper’s compact size contributes to the vehicle’s distinctive style. Its elevated position guarantees excellent visibility to passengers and enhances the interior brightness of the cab.

The Bipper’s modern style is fully expressed in the design of the sides, which are characterised by a slightly curved but perfectly smooth surface. The simple lines create an impression of an optimised interior space. The smooth surface also maximises the display area for professionals wishing to advertise on their vehicle.

The sliding side doors which are available on the Bipper are perfectly integrated into the sides of the vehicle thanks to their smooth shape. Only the door handles and guide rails (at waist height) reveal the presence of these side openings. The windows that can be fitted to the sliding side doors are flush fitting and bonded into the door.

Their design, however, does not detract from the fluid lines of the sides of the Bipper. The rear wheel arches, visually connected to the front wheel arches by the design of the bodywork, breaks up the smooth appearance of the sides with their generous rounded shape.

Flowing from the wheel arches, the rear bumper creates a link between the lights, placed half-way up the body where they are protected from small day-to-day knocks, and the rear doors.

Manufactured and painted as a single assembly, it emphasises the sturdiness of the Bipper. The Bipper’s low-loading height and the design of its hinged doors, which optimise accessibility both width wise and height wise, emphasise how easy it is to load the vehicle. Not forgetting also the access to the load area through the sliding side doors!

Compact, purposeful, user-friendly and strong, the Bipper is designed for everyday city driving. Environmentally friendly too, it’s aerodynamic shape giving it a Cd of 0.31 and a SCd of 0.828, thereby helping to reduce fuel consumption.

Dimensions and load volumes

From professionals to professionals, this new commercial vehicle from Peugeot has been designed to meet the most varied requirements of its professional users.

With a length of 3.86 m, the Bipper is characterised above all by its compact size. Built to make easy work of trips around town, its exterior width does not exceed 1.68 m. When equipped with roof bars, its height is only 1.78 m, enabling it to use underground car parks without any problems.

Fitted with roof bars and a roof rack, the Bipper can carry a load of up to 100 kg on its roof. Inside, the cube-like load area has been designed to offer a generous usable space.

The effective floor load length is 1.52 m, with a maximum interior height of 1.18 m. The width between the wheel arches is 1.05 m, giving a total usable volume of 2.5 m3.

Thanks to the innovative folding multifunction passenger seat, it is possible to increase the load capacity by using the space reserved for the front passenger. This allows long objects to be carried as far forward as the fascia panel; the maximum effective floor length is then increased by nearly a meter, to 2.49 m. The effective load volume in this configuration is now 2.80 m3.

With all this available space, the Bipper can transport a payload of up to 610 kg. The load area is accessible from the rear by means of two asymmetric hinged doors (60/40) providing all-round access to the rear space, both height wise and width wise. The two doors can open to an angle of 90° or even 180° if required thanks to an innovative check strap design. If windows are fitted to these hinged doors, they are flush fitting to preserve the Bipper’s modern profile.

The load sill height, thanks to the optimized design of the doors and rear bumper, is just 527 mm. Thanks to two optional sliding side doors improving access and the low load sill height, it is easy to load and unload goods, even in the narrowest of spaces.

To improve security, it is also possible to unlock the cab separately from the load space, in order to protect transported goods. This is achieved via the three button remote control plip key or a pushbutton switch located on the fascia panel.

Any carried load can be securely stowed, thanks to the fitment of six securing rings attached to the load floor. A range of accessories, adapted to the demands of the local market where the Bipper will be sold, can be used to separate the load from the cab:

A driver’s ladder frame protector is fitted as standard.

- The Bipper can also be equipped with a paneled or glazed cab bulkhead, which in addition to completely separating the cab from the load space, improves the acoustic and temperature comfort inside the vehicle.
- A combination bulkhead, paneled to half its height and with an open grilled section above, is also available as an option. Likewise a modular version in two parts which can open on the passenger side, so is fully compatible with the innovative multifunction passenger seat, is also available.

A practical and comfortable interior

Inside, comfort and convenience take pride of place. Modern, bright and functional, the interior has been designed to be easy to use. The fascia panel with its rounded profile mirrors the shape of the exterior and will answer the needs of the most demanding professionals. It is robus and comprehensive with a four dial instrument panel, a multifunction display, warning lights and a center console. The latter also houses the ventilation or air conditioning controls, the radio and the hands-free phone kit, depending on which options are chosen.

The layout has been ergonomically designed to ensure that each control is within hand’s reach and each instrument is in the driver’s line of sight. This is also the case with the steering wheel, which is height and depth adjustable. The gear lever which is located on the fascia panel, as on all of Peugeot’s new commercial vehicles, increases the available space inside the passenger compartment.

In addition to the comfort, convenience and the immediate wellbeing offered to its occupants there is also a feeling of space and security. Also the raised driving position and large front windscreen provide excellent visibility for the driver, driving around busy modern urban areas. Securely located in comfortable seats with their “Transcodage” cloth trim and generously rounded seat cushions, the driver and passenger can travel and work in the best possible environment.

Designed for professional use, the Bipper is equipped with an innovative and adaptable cab offering multiple storage spaces: a folding multifunction passenger seat, storage compartments, a flat area on the fascia which can be used as a “writing table”, closed glove box, door storage bins, etc.

Functional down to the tips of its controls, the Bipper is welcoming and a pleasure to use on a daily basis.

Wheels and suspension

To ensure good handling in town and impeccable road holding regardless of the load being transported the Bipper benefits from an optimized design of its suspension and wheels. The front suspension is independent with McPherson type front struts and coil springs.

The rear suspension consists of a torsion beam with hydraulic dampers and coil springs. The rear suspension assembly is also secured to the body by means of special flexible mountings which help filter road noise and vibrations.

Thanks to the design of the rear suspension the Bipper can carry a payload of up to 610 kg with minimal impact on the ride height. The Bipper is fitted as standard with 175/70 R14 tires. Versions are also available with an optional “site pack” which raises the vehicle ride height by 15 mm, and includes 15 inch wheels with (185/65R15) tires.

The spare wheel, located in the rear part of the floor, is a full size spare wheel. Hydraulic power steering is fitted as standard. It gives the driver superb versatility in town or on the open road, particularly since the turning circle between kerbs is only 10.2 m.

In terms of braking, the Bipper is fitted at the front with 257 x 22 mm or 284 x 22 mm disc brakes on versions fitted with the electronically controlled manual gearbox, combined with brake calipers with 54 mm diameter pistons.

At the rear the vehicle comes with 203 x 38 mm or 228 x 40 mm drum brakes on versions with an electronically controlled manual gearbox. ABS is standard, to optimize braking efficiency and directional control.

Engines

To ensure when loaded, both a comfortable drive in town or in the suburbs, the Bipper can be equipped with two engines derived from the PSA Peugeot Citroen group, both of which have a proven track record in terms of economy and low emissions.

1.4 liter petrol – 75 bhp

This petrol engine has 4 cylinders and a capacity of 1360 cm3 and produces 54 kW ( ≈ 75 bhp CEE) at 5200 rpm. Its maximum torque output is 118 Nm at only 2600 rpm, i.e. available at low engine speeds and perfectly suited to urban driving conditions. A 5-speed MA manual gearbox is fitted to this engine.

1.4 liter HDi – 70 bhp

This HDi diesel engine has 4 cylinders and a capacity of 1398 cm3. It produces a maximum power of 50 kW (≈ 70 bhp CEE) and a torque of 160 Nm at 1750 rpm. A special feature of this engine is its flat maximum torque curve between 2000 to 2750 rpm, making it extremely flexible in operation.

Two types of gearbox are available with the

1.4 liter HDi engine:

- A 5 speed MA manual gearbox. - A 5 speed electronically controlled manual gearbox, perfect for use in town. Based on the MA gearbox, it uses an electro-hydraulic control system which ensures smooth and flexible gear changes and reduces gear change time.

The gear lever, located in a raised position on the fascia panel, allows the driver to select either manual mode (gear changes actuated by the driver via the gear lever), or automatic mode (no gear changes carried out by the driver).

As well as assisting the driver in urban use, through the convenience it provides, the electronically controlled manual gearbox helps to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Structure

With its modern design, the structure of the Bipper has been developed to comply with the most stringent standards in terms of passive safety. Several front impact scenarios have been analyzed to ensure optimal design of the structural parts, but also to optimize their deformation and capacity to absorb impact forces.

For example, the front bumper incorporates a high-strength steel impact beam. This is mounted on impact absorbers bolted directly to the chassis legs. In the event of a low speed collision, the impact beam and the absorbers absorb the impact forces ensuring there is no damage to the chassis legs.

The aluminum sub-frame has also been designed to control the deformation of the engine compartment in the event of collision and limit any intrusion into the passenger compartment. Similarly, the mountings of the front suspension are designed to transfer impact forces under the body in the event of front impact.

The control of the movement of components in the engine compartment has been designed to limit any possible danger or injury to the driver. This also includes the design of the pedal box and the steering column.

Safety equipment

Restraint systems contribute greatly to passenger safety. The Bipper has three 3-point inertia reel seat belts with height adjustment. They are also fitted with pretensioners and force limiters which reduce the physical forces to which the occupants are exposed.

A warning lamp on the instrument panel reminds the occupants to wear their seat belt and an acoustic signal is activated if the driver’s seat belt is unfastened.

This is essential to ensure the efficiency of the driver and passenger air bags fitted on the vehicle. The passenger air bag, which is optional depending on country, can also be de-activated if required. A warning lamp indicates that it has been de-activated.

Note it is not possible to have both the passenger air bag and the “writing table” on the fascia panel. Side air bags are also available as an option. They are incorporated into the sides of the front seats. Lastly, to complete the safety devices, the Peugeot Bipper is also equipped with a system that detects sharp deceleration and, in the event of a collision, instantly disconnects the electrical power and fuel supply, thereby eliminating any fire risk.

Comfort equipment

Due to its intended professional use, it is expectedby all users that the Bipper will provide high levels of onboard comfort. The seats, of crucial importance to occupants spending many hours in the Bipper, have been designed to offer impeccable performance in terms of both comfort and support. Offering a head restraint, seat travel adjustment and a reclining backrest, their functionality can also be supplemented with height adjustment, lumbar support, an armrest and a heating function.

The multifunction passenger seat demonstrates the attention to detail of the vehicle’s designers. This innovative seat can be configured, firstly, as a mobile office by folding it into the table position. Then the entire seat can be folded into the floor, freeing up additional space for the transportation of long loads (up to 2.49 m). This increases the effective length by nearly a meter. This feature will become a must for professionals wishing to benefit from modularity and an optimized load volume in such a compact vehicle.

For improved visibility and to facilitate maneuvering, the Bipper is fitted with large door mirrors. According to the particular version, they can be adjusted electrically and be heated in conjunction with the heated rear screen demisting function.

When maneuvering in reverse gear, and also for trouble free parking in town, a parking assistance system is available which uses four ultrasonic sensors located in the rear bumper. This system includes an audible warning which indicates that the vehicle is approaching an obstacle by its variable tone.

If the Bipper has a tow bar, operation of the sensors is automatically de-activated when the towed vehicle’s electrical connector is inserted into the tow bar electrical socket. Another extremely useful function for day to day driving is the cruise control - speed limiter. This can be activated by means of a control under the steering wheel.

One-touch electric front windows are available, with the window control switches located on the door panels. Particular attention has also been paid to the Bipper’s ventilation and air conditioning, once again for the benefit of its occupants.

De-misting of the windscreen is assured by eight air vents at the base of the windscreen. In the passenger compartment, air is distributed through four adjustable vents, two in the center and two at the side, and central air vents directed at the floor of the vehicle.

A control for changing the flow of air from outside the vehicle to interior air recirculation is fitted as standard. This is essential equipment when driving in an urban area, since it prevents odours and undesirable particles from entering the passenger compartment.

Manual air conditioning is also available. This also includes a filter for removing pollen, dust and certain particles of polluting gases. In terms of multimedia equipment, the Bipper offers both audio and hands-free phone systems.

The audio range consists of a CD radio which can also play MP3 coded CDs. It has an output of 4 x 10 W and is combined with four speakers (two tweeters and two mid woofers). The hands-free phone kit allows a Bluetooth mobile phone to be used inside the vehicle in complete safety. A ‘pick up / hang up’ control is located on the center console, combined with a microphone mounted in the interior courtesy light.

Calls can simply be answered by pressing the ‘pick up’ button, which interrupts the CD radio operation so that the phone call can be heard through the speakers. Users will therefore be able to work in complete safety in their mobile office!

The “Site Pack”

The “site pack” includes equipment which will allow the Bipper to be driven on rough terrain, such as building sites for example, but also over raised pavements in town and on rural tracks. With increased ground clearance, suspension raised by 15 mm and under body protectors, the Bipper is ready for even the toughest assignments.

The “site pack” consists of:

- Suspension raised by 15 mm
- Larger body sill protectors and special mouldings
- 185/65 R15 tires
- An under–body engine sump guard
- Lower front panel trim
- Front and rear mud flaps
- Washable cab floor covering

The site pack will be available from the second half of 2008.

Running costs

An important factor when choosing a commercial vehicle is the running costs. The Bipper’s running costs are very economical. The service interval is 30,000 km or 2 years, regardless of engine. To reduce costs, the oil change and replacement of certain components such as the air filter, diesel filter, pollen filter and brake pads are all scheduled to coincide with the service interval. All of the above is based, naturally, on normal use of the vehicle.

The timing belt is replaced every 240,000 km or 10 years on the diesel engine, and 150,000 km or 10 years on the petrol version.

Colours

Ten exterior body colours are available for the Bipper.
Four solid colours:
- Bianca white
- Volcano Red
- Clipper Blue
- Paganini Ivory
Six metallic / pearlescent colours:
- Garbato Grey
- Malizioso Red
- Nocturne Blue
- Graphite Grey
- Lacerta Yellow
- Neysha Blue
