BMW Press Release:

BMW Group is a partner in the EU project PReVENT: Round-up event for the research project in Versailles, France from 18th - 22nd October 2007

Munich/Versailles. The round-up event for the research project PReVENT - which is supported by the European Commission - in Versailles, France sees the over 50 cooperation partners involved present the results of their research. The goal of the integrated project is to make road travel

even safer using preventive safety applications and technologies. These applications help the driver to prevent accidents or mitigate their consequences. The systems of the future may be able to recognise the type and urgency of a dangerous situation, for example, while factoring in the condition of the driver at the same time. The overall project was spread out over four years. More than 50 partners, including representatives of the European automotive industry, suppliers, research institutes and state authorities, are involved in PReVENT.

BMW Group Forschung and Technik has played a key role in the following sub-projects:

- WILLWARN (= wireless local danger warning)
- INTERSAFE (= enhances safety at intersections)
- COMPOSE (= protects pedestrians and mitigates the consequences of accidents)
- UseRCams (= development/use of cameras to protect road users and avoid collisions.
- MAPS&ADAS (= use of digital maps for driver assistance systems)

The PReVENT project supports the aim of the

European Commission to halve the frequency of accidents in Europe by 2010. At the same time, it also serves to strengthen the competitiveness of the European automotive industry, promotes scientific discovery and brings together European and national organisations targeting improvements in road safety.
