HPA FT400 Audi TT
January's issue of Eurotuner features the famous Eurotuner Grand Prix in which performance cars from twelve of the top tuners in North America converge under the Californian sun to do battle on the dyno, the drag strip and the Streets of Willow. At the end of these grueling tests, stories are told, winners are declared and promises are made for next year.
HPA Motorsport is no stranger to this event having competed in the past with our single and twin turbo R32s, but this year things would be different. With the unparalleled performance of the Twin Turbo program having been previously showcased, this year it was time to take one of |
our most popular single turbo programs to the track. Stepping up to this task was a very special Audi TT; built as a practice car for the One Lap of America race, it is the new little brother to the Beetle RSi that took the event by storm in 2005.
Amid a sea of cars that arrived on trailers, the TT was driven the thousand or so miles from HPA’s home base in Surrey, BC to the track in Southern California. Then, after a weekend of dyno pulls, hard drag strip launches and a flogging around the Streets of Willow, the new owner proudly took |
delivery of his thoroughbred and drove the car home to Indiana.
Featuring the FT400 turbo system, the black beast is a perfect example of a street driven weekend warrior with smooth linear power and fifteen years of proven reliability knit into a complete package. The FT400 system uses a side mount intercooler to ensure full functionality of the radiator, and this particular vehicle featured HPAs competition upgrade with 50% more volumetric efficiency than the standard version.
On the dyno the car made an impressive 387.3hp |

| and a staggering 445.9 lb/ft of torque thanks to HPA’s combination of proprietary turbo housings and proven software technology. These impressive horsepower and torque numbers were channeled through HPA’s lengthened and hardened gear set and the result was a 12.01quarter mile time on one of the most difficult drag strips in the West. On the punishing Streets of Willow, the car was equally impressive where the buttery smooth power in every gear ensured the car had maximum acceleration everywhere on the elevation comprehensive track. This power was complimented by KW Club Sport suspension with adjustable camber plates working in harmony with a competition Haldex |

controller giving the car ample grip. Of course going fast is fun, but being able to haul the car down from speed quickly and repeatedly is as equally important. HPA’s custom Stage II brakes were up to the task with 360mm rotors up front clamped to a halt by 6-piston calipers and 310mm rear disks out back to keep the package balanced. This is an Audi TT that is comfortable, competitive, and unique.
As a North American first – 6 speed turbo charged 3.2L TT – this black beauty is certainly a one of a kind automobile, but you won’t catch it posing for photographs. This is a purpose built Audi that is as comfortable picking up groceries as it is picking off the competition at a local track near you. Representative of the next step up |
from an HPA FT360 and the middle child of the single turbo family, many a podium finisher would tell you the FT400 is juuust right.
The FT400 is not just for the TT though; there is an entire family of FT series turbo systems available for everything from the 2.8L 24V MKIV Golf to the Touareg.
