BMW Banned From Advertising Zero Emissions

 »  »  »

According to a recent report, BMW has been banned from advertising Zero Emissions in the case of its electric vehicles. The European Advertising Standards Alliance, the organization that makes the rules for the advertising business in the EU market has decided that BMW wrongfully advertises Zero Emissions with its ActivE concept. Apparently, the BMW ActiveE does not have 0% CO2 emissions, so from now on, the German carmaker can't advertise Zero Emissions for its ActiveE concept anymore.

EASA has motivated its decision by explaining that although the BMW ActiveE is electric does not emit CO2, the production of the electricity it needs is done with CO2 emissions. So, driving the BMW ActivE doesn't actually mean you don't emit CO2.

If this is the case, this means that no other electric vehicle can be advertised as having Zero Emissions. Everywhere in this world, electricity is produced mainly by burning fossil fuels, which in turn, emits CO2. We guess this EASA European commission is going a bit too far with this one.
