Jaguar revealed today the new XJ hybrid at the 2012 CENEX Low Carbon Vehicle Event. Called the XJ_e plug-in hybrid, the car in this image is currently an engineering research vehicle. This means that there's still a long way to go until we'll be able to buy a hybrid XJ Jag. For the development of the XJ Hybrid, Jaguar has received help through the REEVolution project, which is funded by the UK Government's Technology Strategy Board. According to Jaguar, the hybrid XJ is able to reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 70%. This is possible by using a an advanced plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) system, which in this case includes the same 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine as the ones powering the Range Rover Evoque.

The Jaguar XJ Hybrid also uses a 69kW motor/generator and a 12.3kWh Lithium Ion battery pack. The power is sent to the wheels via a hybridised 8-speed automatic gearbox.

This new powertrain delivers 334PS and it's able to accelerate the XJ Hybrid from nought to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.5 seconds and to take it up to a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). All this is possible with a fuel economy of 3.2l/100km (87mpg) and a 75g/km CO2 emissions level. The XJ Hybrid is rated with a maximum range of 1092 km (679 miles), while on electricity only can run for 40km (25 miles).

We'll have more details on the Jaguar XJ Hybrid as soon as they're available.
