Mazda has announced today that it will start leasing the Mazda2 electric EV version to various companies across Japan. The Mazda2 electric will enter the leasing program in the spring of 2012 and will equip the fleets of local government bodies and various other customers. No technical details of the electric Mazda2 EV have been revealed yet, except the fact that it will have a range of up to 200 km.

Based on studies done on the electric Mazda2, the company will introduce on other models such new technologies as regenerative braking and hybrid systems.

With the launch of the Mazda2 electric for testing, the company starts the development of

new electric version, destined for short city commutes. The Mazda2 electric is just the start of a process which will probably result in the following years in offering electric versions to private customers too.
