Toyota introduced today the Yaris Hybrid-R concept, which is going to make its first public appearance at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show next week. The Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R's powertrain is based on the TS030 prototype, which raced at Le Mans and in the World Endurance Championship. The Yaris Hybrid-R comes with a 1.6-liter petrol engine and two electric motors. This gives it a four-wheel-drive system. The Yaris Hybrid-R's front wheels are driven by a 4-cylinder direct injection petrol engine that develops 300 hp and 420 Nm of torque. Each of the rear wheels is powered by a 60 hp electric motor. This means that the Yaris Hybrid-R has a total horsepower output of 420 hp. Toyota equips the Hybrid-R Yaris with regenerative braking that stores energy in a super capacitor, a 6 gear sequential transmission and a third 60 hp electric motor.
The third unit is used to charge the capacitator during braking, and to feed the other two motors during acceleration.
In terms of design, the Hybrid-R Toyota Yaris comes with newly designed headlights, a broader grille, a re-styled front bumper with large vents and integrated LED DRLs, 18-inch alloys, and 225/40 R18 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires. The Yaris Hybrid-R is fitted with perforated brake discs and 6-piston front calipers and 4-piston rear ones. For the interior of the Yaris Hybrid-R, Toyota uses Recaro bucket seats covered in blue leather and Alcantara, a sport steering wheel, and the same pedals as the ones used in the GT 86.
The Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R offers two driving modes, Track and Road, as well as a Boost function which uses the energy stored in the capacitator for a maximum of 10 seconds.
So far, Toyota did not say whether or not the Yaris Hybrid-R will ever go into production in this form.
