Volvo has announced today that it will introduce its first plug-in hybrid by 2012. Volvo says the new plug-in hybrid will be able to cover the daily driving needs running just on electricity. For longer distances, the new model will have a diesel hybrid engine. The company expects the new Volvo plug-in hybrid will have a range of around 745 miles with CO2 emissions level of under 50g/km. They also say the new vehicle will have a fuel consumption of 148.6 mpg.

The company does not mention however, on which of its models the new Volvo plug-in hybrid will be based on.

"The new Volvo plug-in will be a truly enjoyable car to drive, featuring Volvo's high safety and comfort standards. At the same time, CO2 levels and fuel consumption will be as low as half that available on the market today." says Stephen Odell, President and CEO of Volvo Car Corporation.
