This is probably the most extensive, and comprehensive, review of the new McLaren P1 available online at the moment. Chris Harris had the chance of spending a lot of time with the P1 on the Yas Marina Formula 1 race track in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and he's sharing his opinions on it. Not only that he had the chance of driving it on the track, but he also managed to drive it on the open road. This review is done in the presence of McLaren's Chief Test Driver, Chris Goodwin, who offers a lot of insight into the P1's technology and design. However, the car Chris drove is the XP7. This is a pre-production prototype of the P1. This means that the McLaren P1 some of us will have the chance of buying, might by slightly different. But it will definitely be more refined. Apparently, in the last fifteen months, the McLaren P1 was driven and tested all around the world, clocking in around 40,000 miles.
At the moment, the McLaren P1 promises to be the quintessential hypercar. Only time will tell if this is truly the case. However, we have to point out a few technical specifications of the P1. The power of the P1 comes from a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that spits out 727 bhp at 7,500rpm and 720Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. There's also an electric motor that adds around 176 bhp more to the equation. With a total output of 903 bhp and 900 Nm of torque, McLaren says the P1 needs less than 3 seconds to get from nought to 62 mph (100 km/h). The 0-200 km/h sprint time is even more impressive! It takes less than 7 seconds! The starting price for the McLaren P1 is £866,000 OTR, and this is not the only discouraging part. McLaren says they've sold all P1 hypercars already...
