Porsche revealed today the updated version of the 911 GT3 R race car. The 2013 Porsche 911 GT3 R is based on the 997 model generation and it's destined to compete in this year's racing season. The new Porsche 911 GT3 R (2013) features wider front and rear fenders in comparison to its predecessor, and its aerodynamics offer more downforce than before. This in turn makes the 2013 911 GT3 R turn sharper and allows the driver to brake later. Its wider track offers more traction than before. Porsche modified the front bumper, the fenders, the sill covers, the rear panel, the underbody panel and the rear diffuser of the new 911 GT3 R (2013) to improve their aerodynamic performance. They also redesigned the rear wing, which now stretches the whole width of the 911 GT3 R.
Both the front and the rear tracks of the new 911 GT3 R are 50 mm wider, which means the suspension had to be modified too. The car's front rims are now 12 inches wide and the wheelbase of the 2013 Porsche 911 GT3 R is 10 mm longer than before.
The powertrain of the 2013 version of the 911 GT3 R remains unchanged. This means it has a 4.0-liter 6-cylinder boxer engine, which has an output of 500 hp (368 kW). The engine is mated to a 6-speed sequential dog-type transmission with a pneumatic shift system and steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.
The car's electronic systems remain unchanged too. The E-gas features a throttle-blip function and the gearbox's electronics stop the driver from skipping gears. The traction control system and the ABS of the 2013 Porsche 911 GT3 R have been re-tuned.
Owners of previous versions of the 911 GT3 R can buy a kit for updating them to the 2013 specifications. The kit is priced at 45,500 Euros. The 2013 Porsche 911 GT3 R's price has not been announced yet.
