Porsche has released today the details of the updated 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0, with which they hope to do better at this year's Nurburgring 24 Hour race. The first version Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid did well in the same endurance race last year, but the engineers know it can do better. The 2.0 version of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid was not developed to go faster, but to require less fuel.

The Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0 continues to be powered by a six-cylinder boxer engine for the rear wheels and two electric motors that drive the front axle. The output of Porsche's 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0 is rated at 470 hp, with both electric motors being upgraded from 60 to 75 kW each. The 2.0 911 GT3 R Hybrid offers up to 200 extra horsepower for a few seconds.

The added hp can be activated automatically or manually by the driver. They usually required when overtaking. The race car's electric flywheel accumulator is now housed with the other hybrid components in a carbon fiber safety cell on the passenger’s side.

The Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0 lost the large louvers in front of the rear fenders, which has reduced drag. This result in a lower fuel consumption. The weight of the race car has also been decreased from 1,350 to 1,300 kilograms.

Porsche's new Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0 comes with a completely revised cockpit, with a new steering wheel that has all the displays and controls. The rest of the functions are now accessible via backlit buttons on the center console.
