Opel has announced today that the first pre-production Opel Ampera has rolled of the production line at the company's plant in Warren, Michigan. In the coming months, the company will build more validation Opel Ampera units which will be used for testing. The engineers in Europe and the United States will test the Opel Ampera pre-production units in order to develop its software and controls. Other test will involve fine tuning the vehicles' driving characteristics. The Opel Ampera will also undergo various safety and structural integrity testing.

The Opel Ampera is powered by an electric motor that offers a 40 miles range, after which an engine generator can extend its range to up to 300 miles.

The Opel Ampera is scheduled to hit the showrooms in 2012.
