The German press reports that the executive board of Mercedes (McLaren F1 team's majority shareholder) voted Alonso out of the team. Although Fernando Alonso's contract runs for another year, they decided that he will not represent their brand in 2008.
Fernando Alonso has expressed his displeasure with the McLaren F1 team during the 2007 season and it looks like Mercedes will not hold him against his will if he doesn't like it.
Norbert Haug - Mercedes' competition director - did not deny the possibility of Alonso leaving, but he also stated that they will not stop him from going to a another team the next season, although he still has a year more in his contract.
