Porsche released today a video explaining in detail their new 7-speed manual gearbox which is now available on the 2012 911 Carrera S 991. Porsche says that the new 7-speed manual transmission is based on the same working principle as their PDK double-clutch automatic gearbox. When equipped with the new seven speed manual, the 2012 Porsche 911 reaches its top speed in the 6th gear, while the 7th one is just for cruising. This means that when in the 7th gear, the 2012 Porsche 911 has less torque, which in turn, reduces its fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, and offers an overall more relaxed drive. On the other hand, less torque means that if you want to overtake, you'll have to shift in the 6th gear to benefit from the extra power and torque of the engine.

The 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S is powered by a 400 hp 3.8-litre boxer engine, and, apart from the new seven-speed manual gearbox, is also available with the fast-shifting PDK automatic one.
