Volkswagen TSI Engine With Cylinder Shut off

 »  »  »

Volkswagen announced today the introduction of a cylinder shut-off system for their 1.4-litre TSI engine. The new technology will be available from 2012 and represents a huge step towards improving the fuel economy of this particular engine. Usually, this type of technology is used for large V8 units, in which it shuts down 4 of the cylinders, when their extra power is not required. Volkswagen’s shut-off system deactivates two of the cylinders under low to medium loads, reducing the fuel consumption of the TSI unit by 0.4 liter per 100 km (NDEC). When combined with start / stop technology, the cylinder shut-off system reduces the fuel consumption of the 1.4-liter powertrain by 0.6 liter per 100 km.

Volkswagen claims that driving at 50 km/h in the 3rd or 4th gear, can save up to 1 liter of petrol every 100 km.

VW's cylinder shut-off system is activated when the 1.4 TSI engine is running between 1,400 and 4,000 rpm and the torque ranges from 25 Nm to 75 Nm. As soon as the driver steps on the gas, the cylinders that were not used, step immediately into action.
