The French carmaker has unveiled today the 2010 Renault Megane RS safety car which will be used in various British series. The 2010 Renault Megane RS safety car will help ensuring the safety of the drivers, obviously, and to ensure the smooth running of the race and that strict timetables are adhered to.

The 2010 Renault Megane RS safety car is based on the Cup chassis and comes with a limited slip differential, stiffer springs, dampers and anti-roll bar, grooved discs and Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires.

The 2010 Renault Megane RS safety car is powered by the standard 2.0-litre, 16V Turbo engine that outputs 250hp and can take the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds.

Renault Press Release:

Renault’s award-winning Megane Renaultsport 250 has been chosen as the new official Safety Car for Renault Sport UK’s motorsport championships.

Voted ‘Best Hot Hatch of 2010’ by What Car?, the flagship Megane can now be seen leading the field in the ELF Renault Clio Cup with Michelin and the Michelin Formula Renault UK Championships – both

prominent support races to the British Touring Car Championship enjoying comprehensive television coverage on the ITV Network.

In addition to ensuring the safety of the drivers, the Megane Renaultsport Safety Car will allow racing to continue, where appropriate, following an on-track incident – much the same as in Formula One – helping to ensure the smooth running of each race and ensuring that strict timetables are adhered to.

To cope with the race track demands, Renault UK has selected to use the 250 Cup model – one of

two distinct chassis choices available in the range. The Cup chassis boasts a limited slip differential, stiffer springs, dampers and anti-roll bar, grooved discs and Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tyres to deliver outstanding performance both on the track and the road.

Manufacturer of the Year

Driven by Scott Stringfellow and observer Peter Harris – the official Safety Car personnel at all

BTCC events – the 250 is powered by a new generation 2.0-litre, 16V Turbo engine developing 250hp with a top speed of 156mph and a 0-62mph time of 6.1 seconds. The 250 also benefits from an innovative steering axis arrangement named ‘PefroHub’. This separates the suspension and steering functions to ensure an exceptionally high standard of handling and grip, and one of the reasons why Renaultsport was also voted Top Gear Magazine’s ‘Manufacturer of the Year’.

As key support races to the popular BTCC series, the Clio Cup and Formula Renault UK Championships are both highly regarded and enjoyed by thousands of motorsport fans.

Formula Renault UK is widely viewed as the

country’s leading single-seater championship, launching the car racing careers of F1 stars Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Räikkönen and Heikki Kovalainen who are all previous champions of the single-seater series.

Meanwhile, the Clio Cup is the UK’s premier one-make saloon-car championship using cars based on the road-going Clio Renaultsport 200 Cup and boasting a host of current BTCC drivers among its former competitors including Mat Jackson, Tom Onslow-Cole and last year’s champion Phil Glew.

Simon North, Formula Renault and Clio Cup Championship Promoter, said: “The role of the Safety Car is vitally important as it not only has to safely navigate the field around the track but do so at high-speed. New Megane Renaultsport 250 accomplishes this role perfectly and thanks to its stunning looks and unique Sport Yellow finish, it’s already becoming a real crowd pleaser.”
