The first details and images of the new 2012 Vauxhall Astra VXR have been released today. Even though the company did not disclose its price, they did announce it will go on sale in 2012. The Vauxhall Astra VXR comes with various performance upgrades, together with distinctive looks. The new hot hatch features a new aerodynamics package, which includes more aggressive bumpers, wider side skirts and a discreet roof wing. Under the hood, the new Astra VXR has a 2-liter turbo engine, equipped with direct injection, which sends 280hp and 400 Nm of torque to the front wheels. So much power on the front wheels is bound to cause torque steer. To handle the problem, Vauxhall equipped the Astra VXR with the HiPerStrut suspension and a mechanical limited slip differential for the front axle.

Just as its Opel-branded brother, Vauxhall's VXR Astra comes with the FlexRide system, which lets you choose between Sport and VXR driving modes. When in VXR mode, the Astra offers the sharpest steering and throttle control, together with the stiffest suspension setting.

Vauxhall tested the Astra VXR extensively on the Nurburgring Nordschleife and on public roads. The tests have been overseen by Le Mans 24-hour race winner, "Smokin' Jo" Winkelhock.

At the interior, the Vauxhall Astra VXR will come equipped with sport seats, a new steering wheel and pedals, door sill plates, various styling elements and new gauges. Vauxhall will also throw in high-performance Brembo brakes, a bespoke exhaust system with two trapezoidal tailpipes and a rear diffuser.

The 2012 Vauxhall Astra VXR is rated with a top speed of 155 mph. So far the manufacturer did not disclose any details regarding its acceleration times, nor price.
