BASF and Smart released today the details of the new ForVision EV concept, which will have its world debut at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show next month. BASF's Smart ForVision concept it's a combination of a lightweight, futuristic design, temperature management technologies and energy efficiency technologies. The interesting looking roof of the Smart ForVision is actually the world's first light-transmitting one, which is also capable of generating energy. The roof of the ForVision concept is covered in transparent solar cells, which are based on organic dyes. Apart from the new space-age solar cells, the roof of the ForVision concept also features transparent OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes), which are responsible for illuminating the Smart's interior.

For reducing the weight of the ForVision concept, Smart and BASF developed the first ever all-plastic wheels, which are able to save up to 3 kg per rim. Also for reducing the weight of the ForVision, Smart fitted it with doors made of carbon-fiber-reinforced epoxy resin, which are 50% lighter than the steel ones and 30% lighter than the aluminum ones.

For heating and maintaining the inside temperature of the Smart ForVision, BASF developed several new materials and technologies, such as a new infrared-reflective film. This film is applied over

the window surfaces of the car, in order to regulate the inside temperature.

The BASF Smart ForVision will not go into production, as it serves as a test bed for new technologies. However, various innovations brought by the ForVision will probably go into future production vehicles.
