BMW released this week more details about the 3 Series hybrid, which is called simply the ActiveHybrid 3. The BMW 3 Series hybrid is powered by a 3.0-liter 6-cylinder petrol engine with TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric motor. The power is sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The total output of the BMW ActiveHybrid 3 is rated at 250 kW/340 hp and 450 Nm of torque. The new hybrid 3 Series is able to work on electricity only up to a speed of 46 mph (75 km/h) and for a range of up to 2.5 miles (4 km). The ActiveHybrid 3 is surprisingly fast for a hybrid. BMW says that their new hybrid 3 Series can get from nought to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 5.3 seconds. The BMW 3 Series hybrid is highly efficient. It's rated with a 47.9 mpg imp (5.9 liters per 100 km) fuel economy and a 139 g/km CO2 emissions level.

The BMW 3 Series hybrid is equipped with an ECO Mode, which includes coasting, intelligent energy management and a start/stop function. For instance, when coasting at speeds of up to 100 mph (160 km/h), the combustion engine can be fully decoupled.

In terms of design, the 3 Series hybrid comes with a range of distinctive features, including various "ActiveHybrid 3" badges, matt chrome exhaust tailpipes, 18-inch Streamline light-alloy wheels and engraved door sills. BMW is also offering an M Sport package for the 3 Series hybrid.

The BMW 3 Series Hybrid's price starts at $50,195 MSRP (including destination and handling). BMW says that it will put the ActiveHybrid 3 on sale this fall. All the details and specifications of the new hybrid 3 Series are available here. Videos are available lower down this page.
