The initial BMW 5 Series Coupe info has surfaced the web today. Apparently, the next generation ^ Series will actually be called the BMW 5 Series coupe, which will also be offered as a cabrio, instead of the 6 Series cabriolet. The reason for this name change is the fact that the German carmaker is trying to reposition the model on a different market segment. This way, the BMW 5 Series model range will get three versions, just like the 3 Series - sedan, coupe and cabrio. Although this BMW 5 Series coupe might seem plausible at first, we kind of doubt it.
If it turns out the BMW 5 Series coupe and cabrio are a reality, they will probably borrow the general styling lines of the latest generation sedan. Going a little further, we might also get
a BMW M5 coupe or even a BMW M5 cabrio. Now that would be interesting. The BMW 5 Series cabrio will probably get a canvas roof.
Even if they will be build the BMW 5 Series coupe (cabrio), BMW is not looking to get rid of the 6 Series name. It will be used for the production version of the Gran Coupe concept.
All this new info is speculation at the moment, and none of it has been confirmed yet.
