Mitsubishi is offering a preview of the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV, which is going to be premiered at this year's Paris auto salon. The new Outlander showcases a new architecture, which was developed from the beginning so that it will work perfectly with either an internal combustion engine, or a PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid EV) powertrain. The Outlander hybrid is going to be EV-based vehicle, which can also use petrol engine when needed. The Outlander hybrid is also the first permanent 4WD electric car to be mass-produced. The powertrain of the hybrid Outlander includes two electric motors, one for each axle, and a front-mounted traction/generator petrol engine. The hybrid Outlander will offer three driving modes: Pure (Twin Motor 4WD EV), Series (Twin Motor 4WD - EV supported by generator) and Parallel (ICE engine supported by Twin Motor 4WD).
What's amazing about the Outlander hybrid is that it will offer a range of up to 800 km and a CO2 emissions level of less than 50 g/km. This is very impressive for a four-wheel-drive SUV. Mitsubishi did not announce the Outlander Hybrid's price, but they do mention it will go on sale across Europe in 2013.
