Smart presented their ebike concept for the first time at the Paris auto show last year. Today, Smart announces that a near-production ready version of their electric bicycle will be on display at the "Eurobike" show in Friedrichshafen (31 August - 3 September 2011) and at the Frankfurt Motor Show (13 - 25 September 2011). They also announced that the smart ebike will go on sale across Europe and North America in the first half of 2012. Smart will develop and build the ebike in collaboration with e-bike manufacturer GRACE, based near Berlin.

Smart's ebike is a pedelec, or Pedal Electric Cycle, and it's in fact a hybrid between a man-powered vehicle and an electric powered one. The ebike has a brushless rear-wheel hub motor

developed by BionX and a braking energy recuperation system. The rider of the ebike can select via a switch how much power he wants the 250 watt electric motor to deliver to support his muscle power. There are four selectable levels and Smart says their new ebike can offer a range of more than 100 kilometers. The Smart eBike comes with a 400 Wh lithium-ion battery, a USB interface that enables you to connect various mobile devices, and Magura MT4 disc brakes.

The Smart eBike price list will start at just under 2,900 EUR in Germany. The ebike's price might differ on other markets.
