Autocar reports that the watermelon could be the fuel of the future. According to various studies around 360,000 tonnes of watermelon are thrown away every year because they don't get sold. apart from the quantity that doesn't get sold, farmers also lose between 20% and 40% of their crops from the same reason. In conclusion, a lot of watermelon gets lost every year.
U.S. researchers however, managed to extract ethanol form the watermelon, which can be used to fuel cars. Researchers from United States Department of Agriculture in Oklahoma found a solution to put to good use the lost watermelon production which can be transformed in around 2.5 million liters of fuel each year.
Although this covers just a small percentage of the total global demand, the watermelon can be used in the ethanol production process.
