Ford announced today that the 2012 Focus ST is equipped with an Overboost function, which extends the torque curve from 3,000 rpm to 4,500 rpm. You'll be able to enjoy the extra umpf for up to 15 seconds, which is quite a lot, especially when you have some fun between traffic lights. Apparently, you'll get around 7.4% more output in the middle of the rev range. Apart from the Overboost, 2012 Focus ST's turbocharger is tuned so that the car will offer more horsepowers throughout the rev range. Ford also announced that they managed to reduce turbo lag. SAE has certified that the 2012 Focus ST's power output is 252 hp and 270 lb.-ft. torque. The new Focus ST is going to have the first EcoBoost engine in the USA to benefit from an Overboost function.

Ford says that the new Overboost will maintain the durability of the engine, while offering brief periods of extra acceleration for performance-hungry drivers.
