BMW presented last weekend the new M3 DTM concept car which previews their race car for the 2012 DTM (the German touring car championship) season. BMW's new M3 racer is based on the fourth generation of the model. They say it has been in development since autumn last year, when the company's Board of Management announced their return to the DTM.

BMW's 2012 M3 DTM racer measures 4,775mm in length, without counting its without rear wing, 1,950mm in width and around 1,200mm in height, depending on its suspension setup. The 2012 M3 DTM racer has a carbon fiber chassis and body, featuring a CFRP monocoque with a steel roll-cage structure. The BMW M3 DTM Concept, and subsequently, the 2012 race car, is powered by

a 4.0-liter V8 engine, developing around 480 bhp, which is mated to a sequential 6-speed gearbox.

BMW says that the 2012 DTM M3 is able to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in around 3 seconds and that it has a top speed of 300 km/h. These are about all the technical details released by BMW, regarding the new DTM M3.



Apart from presenting their new DTM race car, BMW also announced the first two drivers to compete in the 2012 season. They are Andy Priaulx from Great Britain and Augusto Farfus from Brazil.
