As expected, BMW revealed today the new generation 2014 M3 sedan and the first generation M4 coupe. Both, the 2014 BMW M3 sedan and the BMW M4 coupe are powered by the same high-revving, 3.0-litre 6-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology that develops 317 kW (431 hp) between 5,500 rpm and 7,300 rpm and 550 Nm of torque between 1,850 rpm and 5,500 rpm. The new BMW M3 (2014) and the BMW M4 accelerate from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.3 seconds (6-speed manual gearbox) or 4.1 seconds (7-speed Double Clutch M DCT transmission). The 2014 M3 and the M4 are electronically limited to a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). In terms of efficiency, the new M3 (2014) and the M4 are rated with 32.1 mpg UK (34.0) / 8.8 liters per 100 km (8.3). Both M cars are rated with a CO2 emissions level of 204 g/km (194).
It's interesting that the USA specifications of the new M3 (2014) and of the M4 say that they develop just 425 hp from 5,500 – 7,300 rpm and 406 lb-ft of torque from 1,850 – 5,500 rpm. The USA versions of the 2014 Me and of the M4 get from zero to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds M DCT (4.1 seconds with the standard manual gearbox).
Even though they have identical powertrains, there are a few differences between the 2014 M3 sedan and the M4, apart from their body style. The 2014 M3 is 7 mm wider and 41 mm taller than the M4.
The M4 weighs 1,497 kg / 1,572 kg, while the 2014 M3 weighs 1,520 kg / 1,595 kg. This means they have different power-to-weight ratios too (4.79 (4.92) - M3; 4.72 (4.84) M4).
There's no point in talking about their design, since the images and the videos do all the talking you'll ever need.
The 2014 BMW M3 and the BMW M4 come equipped with the trademark four-tailpipe exhaust system with electrically-controlled flaps and different selectable drive modes, programmable with the MDrive Manager. BMW equipped the 2014 M3 and the M4 with a track-ready engine oil supply system as well as a sophisticated cooling system. The new M3 (2014) and the M4 come with a revised 6-speed manual transmission with a new throttle blipping function, which is lighter than the previous one. The 7-speed M DCT transmission comes with launch control, Stability Clutch Control, a 7th speed for cruising, and a driveshaft made of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic.
The new M3 (2014) and the M4 are equipped with an Active M Differential, which is an electronically controlled multi-plate limited-slip differential, that offers a degree of differential lock between 0 and 100 per cent. In the M Dynamic Mode, the diff helps the driver to basically hold the car in a drift for as much as he wants to.
BMW equips the new M4 and the 2014 M3 with an aluminum suspension system and electric power steering with three settings (COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+). The Adaptive M suspension is offering the same three settings too. The M4 and the 2014 M3 come as standard with M Compound brakes, which can be replaced, optionally, with carbon ceramic ones.
The M4 is 80 kg lighter than the previous M3 coupe. The 2014 M3 is also lighter than its predecessor. BMW went to great lengths to reduce the weight of its star performers. These include various CFRP body parts (including the roof), and a CFRP driveshaft.
For the interior of the M4 and of the 2014 M3, BMW is offering M performance parts, bucket seats, leather and Alcantara, and a Professional Media package with an upgraded Bluetooth system. Of course, there's also the BMW Individual program, which allows you to further personalize your M3 / M4.
The equipment list of the 2014 BMW M3 and of the BMW M4 includes, among others, the iDrive Touch Controller, a variety of driver assistance systems and mobility services, the latest-generation of the Professional Navigation system, Adaptive full LED headlights with an intelligent anti-dazzle High-beam Assistant, the new generation Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function and a Head-up Display.
