BMW Press Release:

ENGINE OF THE YEAR JOINS EXPANDED BMW 3 SERIES TOURING LINE-UP

BMW will significantly expand its popular 3 Series Touring range with two new petrol models, both of which are on display at the Australian International Motor Show.

Catering to increasing customer demand, BMW will stamp its authority on the high-performance estate market with the arrival of the top-of-the-range six-cylinder direct petrol injection Twin Turbo 335i Touring.

At the volume end of the segment, the new 320i Touring will give customers a more dynamic product offering at its price point than the competition.

The new petrol engines arrive in showrooms early next year joining the existing straight-six powered 323i Touring.

Developed in tandem with the sedan version, the Touring embodies all the elements that make the BMW 3 Series a dominant force not just in the Australian prestige car market, but also overseas where it is sold in record-breaking numbers.

The BMW 3 Series Touring offers a remarkable combination of driving dynamics, safety, passenger comfort and impressive versatility in a car that is larger than its predecessor in every way, yet actually weighs less.

Sales of the 3 Series Touring leapt 65 per cent in 2006 and so far this year have increased a further 63 per cent, prompting BMW to increase the range of engines offered in this market segment in line with growing customer demand.

"With these new models we expect to further drive and grow the market for practical and sporty 3 Series Touring models in Australia," said Tom Noble, general manager Marketing, BMW Group Australia.

"Customers looking for increased practicality and a dynamic driving experience to match their lifestyle will look no further than the new BMW 3 Series Touring range," he said.

Powered by the same Twin Turbo engine used in the 335i Coupe, Convertible and Sedan models, the new 335i Touring scorches from zero to 100km/h in a blistering 5.9 seconds and is capable of a top speed of 250km/h.

The eye-watering power making this possible comes from BMW's new 225kW all-aluminum 3.0-litre twin-turbo engine that produces lag-free acceleration and the sort of mid-range responses that come from a mountainous torque of 400Nm delivered across a broad rev range covering 1,300 - 5,000rpm.

At the same time, with the help of high-pressure direct-injection technology, the twin-turbo 3.0-litre returns the fuel economy of a much smaller engine (9.8 liters combined consumption).

BMW's market leadership in the field of engine construction is confirmed with the new Twin Turbo engine picking up this year’s "International Engine of the Year Award" along with "Best New Engine of the Year" accolade.

For all this, the new 335i Touring is eminently practical with the ability to seat five occupants in luxurious comfort while providing a generous luggage area that is accessed via a tailgate with separately opening rear window.

The 335i Touring comes equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission including gear shift paddles on the steering wheel.

The 320i Touring is powered by a straight-four two-liter engine featuring BMW's VALVETRONIC engine management system as well as double-VANOS on the intake and outlet side resulting in outstanding power and performance.

The engine develops maximum output of 115kW at 6,400rpm, with maximum torque of 200Nm at 3,600rpm.

Accelerating from 0-100km/h in 9.3 seconds, the 320i Touring is quicker than its immediate entry-level competitors. Fuel consumption in the composite EU cycle is 8.0 liters per 100km.

Like the 323i Touring, the new 320i Touring is available with the choice of six-speed manual gearbox, or optional six-speed Steptronic automatic.

Equipment and specification levels for all BMW 3 Series Touring models are based on the equivalent 3 Series Sedan, with the addition of roof rails and luggage compartment package.

The comprehensive list of standard equipment for the BMW 320i Touring includes split-fold rear seats with height adjustable rear headrests and third 3-point rear seatbelt, multi-function leather steering wheel, 16-inch wheels with 205/55 R16 tyres, roof rails, warning triangle with first-aid kit, anti-dazzle interior rear view mirror, comfort access system, rear Park Distance Control, rain sensor and automatic headlights, automatic climate control with micro filter, cruise control, Bluetooth interface preparation, AM/FM radio with in-dash CD player, front side airbags and head airbags for front and rear passengers, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and tailgate with separately opening rear window.

With the arrival of the new 335i Touring and 320i Touring all models, including the 323i Touring, will incorporate a luggage compartment package, further increasing the high standard of practicality. Included in the package is a removable watertight folding box, reversible liner with integrated protective cover, dividable storage compartment underneath the luggage compartment floor and luggage compartment nets.

All new 3 Series Touring models benefit from the convenience of keyless access and keyless engine start thanks to the smooth-edged remote key and standard Comfort Access.

Customers wishing to add some additional sporting flair can personalise their 3 Series Touring with the M Sport Package, which adds M aerodynamic package, 17-inch double spoke M light-alloy wheels, sports seats, M sport suspension, M multi-function sport steering wheel, anthracite headlining, M door sills and brushed aluminium trim.
