Audi announced today that their piloted RS7 concept is getting closer to being production ready. Recently, Audi tested their piloted RS7 on the Sonoma Raceway in California. The Ingolstadt carmaker says that their piloted Audi RS7 managed to get a record lap time of 2:01.01 minutes. The Sonoma circuit measures 4,050 meters (2.5 miles) in length. The first generation piloted RS7 managed to reach a top speed of 240 km/h(149.1 mph) on the Hockenheimring track. The new piloted Audi RS7 is 400 kg (881.8 lb) lighter than its predecessor and it develops 412 kW (560 hp). We remind you that this piloted Audi RS7 handles all its braking, steering and accelerating functions fully autonomously. Audi says they tested their piloted RS7 on the German autobahns too, reaching speeds of up to 130 km/h (80.8 mph).

We're not really sure that the piloted Audi RS7 will make it into production as a full autonomous vehicle. However, the technology it help develop will increase the safety of future Audi models. Audi says that this new technology is going to have its debut in the next generation of the A8.
