Apart from the standard version of the crossover, VW also revealed at the 2015 IAA in Frankfurt a hybrid version of the 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan, called the GTE. The 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan hybrid is just a concept at the moment. The GTE is Volkswagen's first plug-in hybrid SUV. The Volkswagen Tiguan GTE is powered by a 1.4 TSI turbocharged petrol engine with direct injection that develops 115 kW and an electric motor. The total output of the VW Tiguan GTE is rated at 160 kW / 218 PS. The Tiguan GTE comes with the 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox DSG transmission and a lithium-ion battery than enables it to run in E-Mode (all-electric) for up to 50 km. This gives it an average fuel consumption of 1.9 l/100 km and a 42 g/km CO2 emissions level.

The Volkswagen Tiguan GTE is also equipped with solar panels integrated into the roof. Depending on weather conditions, these solar panels can add up to 1,000 km of free driving per year.

The hybrid Tiguan can be driven in four modes: E-Mode, Hybrid, Battery Charge, or GTE. In the electric-only mode, the Tiguan GTE has a top speed of 130 km/h. In the GTE mode, the internal combustion engine and the electric motor work together to offer as much performance as possible. This means that the VW Tiguan GTE can accelerate from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 8.1 seconds and that it can reach a top speed of 200 km/h.

VW did not announce when they plan to put the Volkswagen Tiguan GTE into production.
