The Chevrolet Sonic RS, which is GM's latest hot hatch, has been revealed today, ahead of its debut, which will take place at the North American International Auto Show, in January 2012. The Sonic RS, which is sold as the Chevrolet Aveo RS in Europe, is powered by an Ecotec 1.4-liter turbocharged engine. The Chevy Sonic RS is rated at 138 horsepower (103 kW) and 148 lb.-ft. of torque (200 Nm), which is more than enough taking into account its size and weight. The Sonic RS is front-wheel-drive and it's equipped with a six-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic.

Chevrolet took special care when developing the suspension and braking systems of the Sonic RS. The hot hatchback comes with a MacPherson strut front suspension with coil springs and a stabilizer bar, while its rear is kept in check by a semi-independent, torsion beam axle-mount compound link-type suspension. The Sonic RS is equipped with a four-channel anti-lock braking system and electronic brake force distribution.

At the exterior, the Sonic RS distinguishes itself through a new body kit, 17-inch alloys, newly designed exhaust tips, and various badges. The aero kit of the Sonic RS includes new front and rear fascias, a rear spoiler a new grille, and a few other styling updates.

For the interior of the Sonic RS, Chevrolet is offering front sport seats, a new sports steering wheel, aluminum pedals, and various other bells and whistles.

The Chevrolet Sonic RS will be available in the five-door configuration only. Its equipment list includes the MyLink infotainment system as standard, Pandora and Stitcher Internet radio.

The Sonic RS's price has not been announced yet, but Chevrolet says it will go on sale early next year.
