Ferrari 488 Spider: Specs, Performance Figures

 »  »  »

The Ferrari 488 Spider had its world debut last week, and the Italian supercar manufacturer released its complete specs and its full list of performance figures. The Ferrari 488 Spider is powered by the same 4.0-liter V8 turbocharged engine as the 488 GTB. It develops 492 kW (670 hp) at 8,000 rpm and 760 Nm of torque at 3,000 rpm. The engine is mated to a 7-speed F1 dual-clutch transmission, and an E-Diff3. Ferrari's specifications also mention that the 488 Spider comes equipped with F1-Trac, a high-performance ABS system with Pre-Fill, FrS SCM-E, and SSC. The official performance figures say that the Ferrari 488 Spider can accelerate from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.0 seconds and that it can reach a top speed of more than 203 mph (325 km/h).

Ferrari also claims that the 488 Spider is able to run the quarter mile in 10.55 seconds.

The Ferrari 488 Spider has a dry weight of 1420 kg (3131 lb), which is just 50 kg more than the GTB version. The extra weight comes from the reinforcements required by the RHT (Retractable Hard Top), which can be opened/closed in just 14 seconds. Ferrari says that a classic fabric soft-top would add 25 kg on top of that.

The 488 Spider comes with a few key aspects. Ferrari claims that they managed to virtually eliminate turbo lag with its new engine, which offers a throttle response time of just 0.8 seconds. The 488 Spider is also equipped with exhaust headers with longer, equal-length piping, a flat-plane crankshaft, an electric glass rear wind stop with three settings, and a spaceframe chassis made of 11 different aluminum alloys combined with other noble metals, such as magnesium.

The world debut of the Ferrari 488 Spider is going to take place at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show this September. Its price and availability are going to be announced at a later date.
