McLaren F1 vs Renault Verdict

 »  »  »

To sum up the facts: in November the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes F1 team accused the Renault F1 team of spying. Apparently the French were in possession of secret documents containing secret information about the McLaren F1 cars. Renault answered that they did have confidential information about the McLaren cars, but they did not use it. And more, McLaren and FIA were constantly informed about the situation.

Mr Phil Mackereth joined Renault's F1 team band brought with him some McLaren engineering drawings and technical spreadsheets. The info was uploaded to Mr Phil Mackereth's personal directory (at his own request) on the Renault F1 Team file system without the knowledge of anyone with authority at Renault.

FIA gave a verdict today in this matter:

- finds Renault in breach of Article 151(c) of the International Sporting Code,
- imposes no penalty due to the lack of evidence that the Championship has been affected.
