To celebrate their birthday, Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks (MBS) revealed this week the 60 Years Unimog concept truck, which is based on the U 5000. The 60 Years Unimog concept is the result of the collaboration between the MBS development branch and the Mercedes commercial vehicle designers in Sindelfingen. Merc's new Unimog combines the past and the future of the brand and just as the first model, which was built back in 1951, the new concept has an open cab.

The new concept is based on the Unimog U 5000 chassis due to its excellent off-road capabilities. In terms of styling, Daimler's designers let their imagination run free. The coil springs of the new Mercedes Unimog concept are painted in red, while the bonnet and other parts of the truck have a fresh green finish.

The Mercedes 60 Years Unimog concept is a design exercise, but some of its features might find their way into future models.

The Unimog, or Universal-Motor-Gerat, is widely used utility vehicle which found its way into the working fleet of many municipalities and contractors around the world. It comes in many shapes and sizes. For example, in China the Mercedes Unimog explores for oil in the Taklamakan desert, while in Australia it's used as a motorhome.
