Toyota Press Release:

Toyota today provided a sneak peek into the cabin of its upcoming Hybrid Camry, releasing the first official interior image.

A close look at the instrument panel reveals that the hybrid car is like no other Camry - and is certainly very different from all other locally produced cars.

Toyota's Hybrid Camry will be the first hybrid car to be built in Australia.

Several features highlight the fact that Hybrid Camry is powered by Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive technology, which has been shown to produce significant reductions in fuel use and emissions.

A luminous green "ready" symbol shows the ignition has been switched on - even though the petrol engine remains off.

In the instant fuel-consumption meter, the needle is pointing at the electric-only mode -

using no fuel and emitting zero emissions.

Other specific hybrid features are the cool blue highlights on the dials and, in the center of the speedo, a prominent "Hybrid Synergy Drive" display.

The interior image has been released to coincide with the start of the second and final stage of pilot production for Hybrid Camry.

Such pre-production trials are a normal part of introducing a new car, enabling Toyota to test all its processes, parts and assembly methods.

A month ago, Victorian Premier John Brumby and Federal Industry Minister Senator Kim Carr attended the official start of pilot production at Toyota's manufacturing plant in Altona, Melbourne.

Full-scale production is due to start in December, with Hybrid Camry models arriving at Toyota dealerships nationally from February.

As its name implies, Hybrid Camry features two power sources - a 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor generator,

plus a hybrid battery that stores electrical energy.

Camry is already Australia's most fuel-efficient locally produced car, consuming just 8.8 litres to travel 100km*.

Toyota Australia's senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said Hybrid Synergy Drive will take Camry's efficiency to a new level.

"Hybrid Camry will have substantially more power than the petrol-only car while using at least 20 per cent less fuel," Mr Buttner said.

"It will save motorists hundreds of dollars a year in fuel - and the more you drive, the more you'll save on fuel."

In preparation for the launch, Toyota has begun final quality assurance testing of locally built Hybrid Camry.

The comprehensive trials, which include long-distance endurance evaluation, are being conducted by Toyota's Quality Control Division.

Development and tuning of the Hybrid Camry's steering and brakes have occurred under the supervision of Toyota Technical Center Australia, a Melbourne-based subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan.
