Turbo back to Formula 1

 »  »  »

According to a report from today, turbo may come back to Formula 1. Apparently, FIA officials are considering a 1.5-liter turbo engine as an alternative to the current unit. There hasn't been a turbo engine in F1 since 1989 when FIA banned them because of their insane amount of power. It was simply impossible to ensure the safety of the drivers at the ridiculously high speeds the turbocharged F1 race cars were reaching.

This rumor has not been confirmed by any of the F1 officials, but if it turns out to be true, don't expect the same amounts of power as the ones before 1989. The 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is being considered simply to reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.

With a smaller engine, a return of the turbo, and less power, FIA is also considering allowing KERS back.

This is probably an attempt to get tree huggers of Formula 1's back, so don't expect to see less action from the 2011 season. And then again, we could use a little more action from the current season.
