More and more sources are claiming that BMW is working on a diesel M5 model. It will not be an actual M5 with a diesel engine, but a performance version for BMW's 5 Series diesel model range. Called the 550dXM, the new diesel 5 Series M is expected to come on the market sometime in 2012. The BMW 550dXM will have a diesel engine, but it will be built on the same high performance chassis as the M5, complete with the trick suspension and sharp handling.
The 550dXM diesel Bimmer is expected to be powered by a 3.0-liter engine, equipped with a triple turbocharging system, that will output more than 500 hp. Some even believe it will get close to 550 hp. The BMW 550dXM should develop just under 700 Nm of torque.
BMW did not confirm the existence of the BMW 550dXM, however, they did not say a diesel M5 is entirely out of the question.
