Chevrolet revealed today at the NY auto show what they call the most fuel-efficient midsize model they've ever built, the Chevy Malibu ECO. Chevrolet's new Malibu ECO features the fuel-saving eAssist technology which features a lithium-ion battery and an electric motor-generator that work together for enabling a enable regenerative braking and start-stop functionality. The whole eAssist system weighs 65 pounds (29 kg).

The Chevrolet Malibu ECO also has an Ecotec 2.4-liter combustion engine, equipped with direct-injection and mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The output of the gasoline engine is rated at 180 horsepower (134 kW).

Chevrolet estimates that the new Malibu ECO will be able to offer a fuel economy of up to 26 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway.

The distinctive design feature of the Chevy's Malibu ECO is the front grille which features active shutters meant to improve fuel efficiency.

Chevrolet will announced the price list for the Malibu ECO towards the summer of 2011, when the new model will go on sale.
