The current version of the BMW M5 monster is powered by a 5.0-litre V10 nuclear reactor that outputs 507 hp. According to a new rumor the next gen BMW M5 will have even more horses to play with. It seems BMW is upgrading the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 from the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M, that outputs 564bhp, to develop more than 600 hp. The newly developed engine will power the next gen BMW M5. The extra power is needed so the company can put the next gen BMW M5 against the Audi RS6.
The rumor also says the next gen BMW M5 will be equipped with an F1 style KERS system, but with the current trend in F1 to give up on it, it's hardly likely.
Apparently, for better fuel economy, the next generation BMW M5 will also feature a system that shuts down some of the cylinders when the extra power is not needed.
