According to various sources, BMW is currently developing a new family car, which is going to be called the i5. The BMW i5 is going to be based in the i3's platform, which is going to get stretched. This will offer the BMW i5 more room for the rear passengers, as well as considerable more boot space. In comparison to the i3, the BMW i5 is going to offer 100 mm of extra leg room for the rear passengers and it's going to have a 150-mm longer rear overhang. The BMW i5 will probably be heavier than the i3 too. This means that it would probably require a more powerful powertrain than the i3. The i3 is powered by an electric motor that's good for 170 hp and 250 Nm of torque. There's also a version of the i3 that comes with a 34 hp range extender engine. With this hybrid powertrain, the i3 is able to get from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 7.2 seconds.
If the BMW i5 is going to be powered by the same engine setup, it will most probably be slower to 62 mph (100 km/h) and it will have a shorter range too. However, BMW may decide to use a more powerful hybrid system for the i5 and more potent batteries.
