Mazda unveiled today at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show their latest crossover, the CX5, which will go on sale early next year. The new Mazda CX5 crossover measures 4,540 mm in length, 1,840 mm in width, 1,670 mm in height and has a 2,700 mm wheelbase. It offers five seats and has a 215 mm (FWD) / 210 mm (AWD) ground clearance. The new CX5 will be available in two versions: one with a FWD (front-wheel-drive) system and the other one with an AWD (all-wheel-drive) drivetrain.
Mazda offers two engine choices for the CX5, including a gasoline unit and a diesel engine, with two power output levels. The petrol version of the CX5 has a 2.0-liter 16-valve in-line 4-cylinder DOHC engine, with an output of 121 kW / 165 PS (FWD) or 118 kW / 160 PS (AWD) at
6,000 rpm and 210 Nm (FWD) or 208 Nm (AWD) of torque at 4,000 rpm. Mazda's gasoline CX5 will have a 6.0 l / 100 km combined fuel consumption and a 139 g/km CO2 emissions level.
The diesel Mazda CX5 will be powered by a 2.2-liter (2,184 cc) engine which will be available in a "Standard" output level and a "High" output level. The Mazda CX5 SKYACTIV-D 2.2 Standard Power develops 110 kW / 150 PS at 4,500 rpm and 380 Nm of torque from 1,800 rpm to 2,600 rpm. The CX5 High Power has an output of 129 kW / 175 PS at 4,500 rpm and 420 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm.
Mazda says that the diesel version of the CX5 has a combined fuel consumption of 4.5 l /100 km/h and a 119 g/km CO2 emissions level. This means that the diesel CX5 complies with the future Euro 6 emissions standards.
Mazda will sell the new CX5 with its latest 6-speed automatic transmission, called SKYACTIV-Drive, which features extra wide lock-up clutch and offers quick and direct shifting. The CX5 will also be available with the SKYACTIV-MT 6-speed manual gearbox.
In terms of exterior styling, Mazda took special
care in offering the best possible aerodynamics efficiency. The CX5 has a drag coefficient of Cd 0.33, which one of the best among crossovers. the CX5 is built upon Mazda's SKYACTIV-Chassis, which aims to provide comfort and agility. It comes with a newly developed suspension geometry and steering system.
At the interior, the Mazda CX5 promises to offer plenty of space for all its five passengers and their luggage. The boot has a 500-liter capacity when the seats are up right, and its passengers
have 997 mm of leg room. For entertainment purposes, Mazda equips the CX5 with 5.8-inch touch screen, iPod, USB, Bluetooth, and Aux connectivity, a TomTom based navigation system, and the company's HMI commander system. Optionally, the Mazda CX5 can also be fitted with a Premium BOSE Surround Sound System. The HMI (Human Machine Interface) commander is an innovative system which aims to minimize the need for the driver to look away from the road, when operating various controls. The HMI includes steering wheel mounted controls and a center display touch screen.
In terms of safety, the CX5 Mazda features all the usual equipment, including ABS, airbags, together with a number of innovative systems. For instance, the CX will come with Smart City Brake Support, a Rear Vehicle Monitoring System, a Lane Departure Warning system and High Beam Control.
