The British press managed to get new Mazda MX5 Superlight info before the car's launch at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The Mazda MX5 Superlight will have a 995 kg kerb weight and will be powered by a 1.8-litre engine developing 125bhp and 123lb.-ft. of torque. This means the Mazda MX5 Superlight will be able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds and will offer a 45mpg fuel economy.
The low weight of the Mazda MX5 Superlight has been achieved by removing the roof, the windscreen, the air conditioning and a number of other, non-driving oriented, gizmos.
For better handling and stability, the Mazda MX5 Superlight has a 50 mm wider track than the standard model and four-piston brakes with ventilated discs.
The Japanese brand however, does not plan to put the Mazda MX5 Superlight into full production yet.
