Volkswagen Enters WRC

Various sources are reporting today that VW plans to announce its WRC entry by the end of the month. Rumors of Volkswagen's entry in the World Rally Championship started surfacing quite a while back. At that time, it was believed that the Scirocco will be the racer carrying VW's badge in the WRC. Recent developments indicate that, in fact, VW will compete with one or more Polo R based race cars.

The Volkswagen Polo WRC will be powered by a 1.6-litre turbo engine, developed based on the powertrain of the future Polo R. The exact power and torque output figures of this new engine are not known at the moment. Volkswagen stopped considering the Scirocco as a potential candidate for its WRC entry due to its width.

Apparently, the Scirocco does not meet the FIA requirements for the World Rally Championship in terms of dimensions.

Volkswagen has long been expected in the WRC and this year might be the moment the VW logo will join the game. We'll keep you posted with the latest developments on this matter.
