Volkswagen presented during the EU research project HAVEit (Highly Automated Vehicles for Intelligent Transport) the Temporary Auto Pilot system. Volkswagen TAP can semi-automatically drive the car by itself up to a speed of 130 kilometers per hour on motorways. VW says that the car still has to be monitored by the driver. VW considers that the new Temporary Auto Pilot system represents a link between today's assistance systems and a possible future fully automatic driving system.
Volkswagen's Temporary Auto Pilot combines semi-automatic functions (ones that are monitored by the driver) and assistance systems, such as ACC adaptive cruise control and the Lane Assist system.
VW's semi-automatic driving mode, called the Pilot Mode, is able to keep a safe distance to the vehicle ahead, drives at a speed the driver selects, breaks as necessary before a bend, and keeps the vehicle on the selected lane.
