The 2014 Volkswagen Golf R has been unveiled today, ahead of its global debut that's going to take place at the Frankfurt auto show this September. We'll go straight to the business end of the 2014 VW Golf R - its engine. The 2014 Golf R is powered by a 2.0 TSI turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine that develops 221 kW / 300 PS from 5,500 rpm to 6,200 rpm and 380 Nm of torque from 1,800 rpm to 5,500 rpm. This is 70 hp and 30 Nm of torque more than the standard Golf VII GTI. In comparison to the engine used in the GTI, the 2014 Golf R's engine comes with a modified cylinder head (together with exhaust valves, valve seats and springs), new pistons, high-pressure injection valves and a new turbocharger.
These modifications help reduce the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of the new Volkswagen Golf R (2014), and they increase its horsepower and torque output. The engine of the new VW Golf R (2014) is mated to an all-wheel-drive system through a 6-speed DSG automatic transmission. When equipped with the manual gearbox, the new Golf R (2014) needs 5.3 seconds to get from nought to 62 mph. With the DSG transmission the sprint time drops to 4.9 seconds. VW limits the top speed of the 2014 Golf VII R to 155 mph (250 km/h). They claim that it has a combined fuel economy of 6.9 litres per 100 km.
Apart from the modified engine, the 2014 Volkswagen Golf R comes with a 20 mm lowered suspension system, Adaptive Chassis Control, progressive steering, and ventilated brake discs measuring 30 mm by 640 mm at the front and 22 mm by 310 mm at the rear.
Volkswagen also equips the 2014 Golf R with a distinctive aerodynamic package that includes a new front bumper with larger air vents, a new front grille, LED DRLs, side skirts, a rear diffuser and discreet roof wing. However, the most distinctive element of the 2014 Golf 7 R's design is its exhaust system with four tail pipes, two on each side of the car.
