The new BMW i8 is powered by a plug-in hybrid drive system that uses a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder petrol engine with TwinPower Turbo technology, a synchronous electric motor and a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The 1.5-liter internal combustion engine drives the i8's rear wheels and it produces 170 kW/231 hp and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque. It has a low center of gravity (below 460 mm) and an aerodynamic coefficient of Cd 0.26.
